NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Surrogate mother Mary Beth Whitehead and her husband today received an uncontested divorce, with Whitehead saying they were still in love but were unable to maintain their marriage because of the pressures of the celebrated Baby M custody case.
The divorce clears the way for Whitehead, who is pregnant with her fourth child, to marry the live-in boyfriend who fathered it.
Richard and Mary Beth Whitehead, who were married for 14 years, sat together in court before the hearing, chatting with each other and joking with photographers.
She said the two are “still very much in love” and will remain friends. The Whiteheads left the court in the same car.
