Rene Arredondo of Mexico will defend his World Boxing Council junior welterweight championship tonight at the Sports Arena against fifth-ranked Roger Mayweather of Las Vegas.
Arredondo has a 39-3 record with 34 knockouts. Mayweather, also 26, has a 28-5 record with 19 knockouts. He has won his last five fights.
Meanwhile, International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Vinny Pazienza has signed to defend his title in a rematch against Greg Haugen Feb. 6 at Atlantic City, N.J.
In other boxing news, Butch Lewis, promoter for Michael Spinks said he has given up hope of his fighter meeting heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
Tyson’s managers, Jim Jacobs and Bill Cayton, said a Tyson-Spinks fight can be arranged only if Lewis is not involved in the promotion.
