Litton Industries was awarded a $378.7-million contract by the Navy to build the third vessel in a new class of 40,500-ton amphibious assault ships. The award is a modification to a 1986 contract, which included funding for options on the third and fourth ships. The award went to Litton’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division in Pascagoula, Miss. The LHD ships are designed to transport and land about 3,000 fully equipped Marines, including Harrier jets, Navy helicopters and air cushion landing craft.
