Local News in Brief : Sportsmanlike Conduct

After hearing hours of presentations from two business partnerships offering to privately manage the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sports Arena, the Coliseum Commission voted Wednesday to further examine privatization but stopped short of saying it favored the concept.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich first offered a motion that would have signaled the commission’s intention to place the facilities under private management. But after commission President Alexander Haagen and two other commissioners balked at supporting it, Antonovich softened his motion to simply call for further examination of the idea.

Presenting their own management bids were partnerships composed of MCA Inc. and Spectacor Management on the one hand and Weintraub International and the Madison Square Garden Corp. on the other.

The commission will meet again next week to decide whether to negotiate with one of the bidders on an exclusive basis, or to try to proceed with both.
