Local News in Brief : Calas to Seek Reelection

Carson Mayor Kay Calas, who was first elected to the Carson City Council in 1976, announced Monday that she will seek reelection to the council in the spring.
Calas’ announcement means that the existing three-member alliance will be seeking to retain control of the five-member council. Although Calas delayed her decision to run, her council allies--Michael Mitoma and Vera Robles DeWitt--made no secret of their intentions to seek reelection.
Elections for seats held by Calas, DeWitt and Mitoma will be held April 14.
Opposing them on the council are Syliva Muise and Tom Mills.
Probable opponents in the election include Aaron Carter, who was backed by Muise and Mills this year when Mitoma was elected in a special election, and Roye Love, who also ran in that race.
The filing period for candidates will begin Jan. 14 and run till 5 p.m. Feb. 4. If one of the incumbents does not file for reelection, the filing period will be extended to 5 p.m. Feb. 9.
In the election, all candidates run against each other with the winners being the top three vote-getters.
