San Francisco State University black students barged into the offices of the school newspaper to protest what they said was racist coverage of campus elections. There were no arrests. More than 100 students entered the Humanities Building, and about 50 surged into the Gator offices for a 70-minute shouting session over coverage of the unsuccessful reelection bid of Associated Students President Lamont Coleman, who blamed his loss to Peter Gamez, a Latino, on the campus paper. Editor Rick Lindsey and Vernon Thompson, a faculty adviser, denied the charges but did agree to meet with the students on Dec. 10. The incident occurred 20 years to the month after leaders of the Black Student Union trashed the newspaper’s offices, beat a student editor and injured a faculty adviser, also in a protest over campus election coverage.
