The Veterans Administration said it is making room to house 525 homeless veterans in unused spaces at 10 urban VA medical centers around the country. Describing the move as a major expansion of its domiciliary care program, the VA said it was using a $15-million special congressional authorization to create the additional space. The money will be spent on renovations and furnishings to create therapeutic living areas and on personnel to locate homeless veterans through existing shelters and welfare agencies. VA spokesman Bonner Day said the sites, including one in Palo Alto, Calif., were determined through a systemwide search for unused or under-utilized space at the VA’s 172 hospitals and 117 nursing care centers.
