BOSTON — A former stockbroker was convicted of first-degree murder Monday for gunning down his former boss at Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith in revenge for being fired one day earlier. The jury rejected a temporary insanity defense put forward by lawyers for Lonnie Gilchrist, 42.
Prosecutors said Gilchrist returned April 7, 1988, to the 36th-floor downtown office where Vice President George Cook, 56, had fired him the day before, then shot Cook five times and pistol-whipped him before being subdued by office workers.
