Soviet Population Now 286.7 Million

MOSCOW — The Soviet population has risen to 286.7 million people from 281.7 million two years ago, according to results of a January census.
The figures, published over the weekend in the government newspaper Izvestia, showed that 116 million people were employed in industry, 10.5 million in collective farming and 2.7 million in the growing cooperative sector.
Average monthly earnings in industry were $390 and in collective farms $255.
The census indicated that crime shot up 31% during the quarter over the same period of 1988 to 509,000 crimes.
