3 Injured as Bomb Rips Store in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Three people were injured when a parcel bomb exploded in the toy department of a state-owned department store in Georgetown, and in a separate incident, two elementary schools were set on fire, police said Sunday.

The explosion occurred Saturday evening as employees at the foreign exchange store were examining a taped parcel found in the toy department of Sijan Plaza, police said. Three store employees were slightly injured.

Police also said two primary schools were set on fire early Sunday morning. The fires follow a series of blazes in public buildings and in the state-owned sugar industry, which the ruling People’s National Congress has blamed on the opposition People’s Progressive Party.
