HARRISBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania’s Super 7 jackpot rocketed to a record $83 million today with fortune hunters snatching up tickets at a pace faster than 400 per second. Lottery officials said things would get even more frantic before Wednesday’s drawing.
Marc Narducci, editor of Lottery Player’s magazine, said that a single winner would be the largest prize recipient ever in North America, topping the $55.1-million Florida lottery pot won by Sheela Ryan in 1988.
The prize also surpasses the total $69.9 million split last weekend by four winners of the Illinois Lotto. Until the Pennsylvania lottery took off, the Illinois jackpot had been the largest in North American history.
