P. M. BRIEFING : Foreign Chips Gain in Japan

TOKYO — Foreign-made semiconductors took a record 12% share of the Japanese market in the third quarter of this year, a Ministry of International Trade and Industry official said today.
Third-quarter sales totaled $569 million, up from a previous record of $555 million, or 11.5% of the market, in the second quarter.
When the U.S.-Japan microchip pact was signed in the third quarter of 1986, foreign firms had an 8.6% share, worth $248 million, the official said.
