And a footnote: While some African-American writers have attacked black Christians for worshiping what James Baldwin called “a white man’s God,” Langston Hughes reaffirms the universality of the faith in “Black Nativity” by depicting Jesus, Mary and Joseph as black and telling their tale through gospel music.
