A 31-year-old transient picked “the wrong time and the wrong place” to hold up a bank in Upland when an off-duty detective from neighboring Ontario who was in the bank on personal business stepped forward and took him into custody Friday, Upland police said.
“It was very neighborly of him,” said Upland Police Lt. Walter Ciszek, speaking of Ontario Detective Darrell Reed, who heard the robbery taking place, pulled his gun and took Ardis Bowles into custody without incident. The $1,568 Bowles had allegedly taken from a teller was recovered.
The incident occurred at the Wells Fargo Bank branch in the 1000 block of West Foothill Boulevard. Ardis, police said, produced a note written on a blank check saying “I have a gun.”
But Ciszek said, “He didn’t.” Bowles was booked on suspicion of robbery and held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
