UCLA opened as the southern branch of the University of California, which opened in Oakland in 1869. Built on a bean field, UCLA opened in 1929 with four buildings. By 1930, five buildings graced the campus: Royce Hall, Powell Library, Haines Hall, Kinsey Hall and Moore Hall. Today the Westwood campus boasts close to 90 buildings and covers 411 acres.
