Officials in New Jersey said they have opened a criminal investigation into the underwater oil leak from Exxon’s Bayway refinery in Linden. Subpoenas have been served on six Exxon employees, a spokesman for the New Jersey attorney general said. More than half a million gallons of heating oil spilled into the Arthur Kill waterway between New Jersey and New York City last week after a pipeline was struck by an unidentified vessel. The Coast Guard said it will use oil-catching filter fences to protect marshlands on Staten Island and the New Jersey coast.
