COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Southern California College Rallies to Defeat Occidental

Southern California College won the Occidental College men’s basketball tournament Saturday night by defeating the host team, 72-58.
Trailing at halftime, 23-19, SCC scored the first six points of the second half to pull away.
Center Jeff Bickmore had eight rebounds and led SCC (8-5) down the stretch, as 17 of his 21 points came in the second half.
“We weren’t playing within our offense in the first half,” said Bickmore, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound junior from Santa Ana. “We made that adjustment in the second half, and I got the shots I wanted.”
Center Chris Anderson led Occidental (5-8) with 20 points.
In nonconference men’s basketball:
Christ College Irvine 91, Fontbonne 85--Kevin Kurz had 24 points and Mike Oden 22 to lead Christ College Irvine. Aaron Clasen had 13 points and Jamie McShan 10 for Christ College Irvine (8-10).
In women’s nonconference basketball:
Chapman College 90, North Carolina Greensboro 55--Leading 19-15 four minutes into the game, host Chapman College went on a 17-0 run over the next four minutes en route to a 46-29 halftime lead and was never challenged. Forward Bethel Trice had 26 points to lead Chapman (11-3). Teammate Ruth Akahoshi added 23, including 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting from three-point range. Greensboro (7-2) was led by forward Karen Jordan’s 14 points. Center Jennifer Uecke had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Chapman.
At the UC Irvine swimming invitational:
UC Irvine’s Jeff Klatt won the 200-yard individual medley and teammate Dave Pohlmann won the the 500-yard freestyle in the first day of the swim meet at Irvine’s Heritage Park.
Klatt had a time of 1 minute, 59.48 seconds and Pohlmann had a time of 4:43.95. The Irvine men also won the 400 medley relay in 3:34.67.
In the women’s division, Irvine’s Danielle Pajer (1:10.43) was second in the 100 breaststroke behind Cal State Long Beach’s Kelley Evans (1:09.62), and Irvine’s Debbie Babashoff (5:13.95) was second in the 500 freestyle behind Long Beach’s Lynnet Kosmala (5:11.68). Irvine was third in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 8:13.66.
In nonconference wrestling:
Northern Iowa 20, Cal State Fullerton 15--Northern Iowa, the 10th-ranked team in the nation, defeated host Fullerton by winning five of the 10 matches and earning a tie in a sixth match. Fullerton is 3-5 and Northern Iowa 7-1. David Jones defeated Greg Berg, 15-8, in the heavyweight division for Fullerton.
