AHEAD OF THE CURVE: The County Fire Department’s campaign for fire sprinklers in new homes (B1) is not its first such lobbying effort. . . . In 1975 it promoted a county ordinance requiring household smoke detectors, followed by a statewide requirement in 1984. Now at least 37 states have similar laws, and the result has been a 50% decrease in fire deaths nationwide, authorities say.
