Hanifan Arrested on Drunk Driving Charge

Interim Coach Jim Hanifan of the Atlanta Falcons was in police custody after his Thursday morning arrest for drunk driving and battery.

Hanifan was arrested about 4 a.m. in north Atlanta for driving without his headlights on. According to police, his blood-alcohol level was .13. The legal limit for driving under the influence in Georgia is .10.

Police also said that Hanifan hit one of the arresting officers in the chest.

Hanifan, 56, formerly head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, joined the Falcons as an assistant in 1987 and took over the team with four games remaining when Marion Campbell resigned Nov. 28. Hanifan was winless as head coach and the Falcons finished at 3-13.
