COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Duke’s Late 17-2 Run Gives Georgia Tech First Defeat

Phil Henderson said it was a case of making the last run stick as 10th-ranked Duke ended No. 9 Georgia Tech’s perfect record with a 96-91 Atlantic Coast Conference victory Thursday night.
Henderson, who led the Blue Devils with 26 points, called the game “a dogfight.”
Christian Laettner added 23 points for Duke (11-2, 2-0), which ended a five-game losing streak at Atlanta by overcoming a 10-point deficit in the final nine minutes.
Henderson scored seven points and Laettner hit five free throws in a 17-2 run after Tech (10-1, 1-1) had taken a 78-68 lead with just under nine minutes to play.
No. 11 Louisville 79, S. Carolina 66--Keith Williams made eight of nine shots in scoring a career-high 24 points as the Cardinals won a Metro Conference game at Columbia, S.C.
Williams scored eight of his team’s first 14 points to help Louisville (11-2, 1-1) take a 36-18 halftime lead over the error-prone, cold-shooting Gamecocks (5-4, 1-1).
Purdue 86, No. 16 Minnesota 78--Ryan Berning scored all 13 of his points in the final nine minutes, including six free throws in the final 71 seconds, as the Boilermakers snapped the Gophers’ 10-game winning streak in a Big Ten game at West Lafayette, Ind.
Purdue (10-2, 2-0) led 43-30 at halftime and stretched it to 71-53 before the Gophers (10-2, 1-1) staged a rally in the final seven minutes.
Tulane 81, No. 20 Memphis St. 80--Michael Christian hit a three-pointer with 28 seconds left to give the Green Wave a Metro Conference victory in New Orleans.
Anthony Reed scored 25 points for Tulane (3-8, 1-2). Memphis State is 9-4 and 1-1.
Temple 73, W. Virginia 69--Mark Macon scored 27 points and Duane Causwell made two crucial free throws with five seconds left as the Owls snapped the Mountaineers’ six-game winning streak in an Atlantic 10 game at Philadelphia.
Temple (6-5, 4-1) rallied in each half, trailing by as many as 16 points in the first half and by 62-54 with 7:53 remaining.
Clemson 78, N.C. Asheville 54--Senior forward Kirkland Howling came off the bench to score 17 points, including five of eight three-pointers, at Clemson, S.C.
The Tigers are 10-3. N.C. Asheville is 6-6.
Michigan St. 78, Ohio St. 68--Matt Steigenga scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack as the Spartans got their 1,000th basketball victory in a Big Ten game at East Lansing, Mich.
Jim Jackson’s 17 points led Ohio State. Alex Davis had 16, as the Buckeyes shot just 37.7%. Cincinnati 82, Florida St. 62--Louis Banks scored 19 points and led a balanced attack as the Bearcats rallied and then ran away in the Metro Conference game at Cincinnati.
