Widely regarded as the surprise team in the Pacific 10 Conference, Cal has prospered by using an up-tempo style that features three starting guards. Senior point guard Keith Smith averages a team-leading 16.7 points and 7.1 assists a game and has made 49% of his three-point attempts. Forward Brian Hendrick, a redshirt freshman from Diamond Bar High and son of former major league baseball player George Hendrick, averages 15.5 points and 8.2 rebounds and is shooting 67.1% from the field. “He’s playing like a veteran,” Cal Coach Lou Campanelli said. “He’ll be an All-American before he’s finished.” Hendrick had 16 points and 12 rebounds on Thursday night as Cal overcame a 10-point second-halftime deficit to beat USC, 74-60.
