WASHINGTON — A $49,625 rug installed in the Oval Office a year and a half ago and left by the Reagans as a gift has been replaced by President Bush as part of an overall redecoration program, the White House said today.
The old rug, which took two years to design and make and was paid for by an anonymous donor, was removed Friday. It was replaced by an oval rug measuring 30 feet, 10 inches long by 23 feet, 5 inches wide.
Larry Hokanson, president of a Houston company that made the new rug, said it cost $28,550, plus freight and installation charges, and was paid for by private donors.
It was unclear what would happen to the old rug.
“It was not terribly attractive. The President did not like it,” Hokanson said.
