SEAL BEACH : Police, Fire Expenses May Hike City Costs

City Manager Robert Nelson told the City Council recently that the city’s operating costs will increase in the 1990-91 fiscal year--including a jump of $600,000 for firefighters.
Nelson said the cost of securing county fire services can be expected to jump from the current $1.8 million to around $2.4 million by 1991.
Other increased outlays are expected to result from the recent hike in workers’ compensation rates, which jumped from $244 a week to $322 a week as of Jan. 1. The standard rate is scheduled to increase again next year.
Police Chief Bill Stearns requested $70,000 to buy a logging recorder and a computer system and to cover a possible $46,000 overrun, Nelson said.
The department’s fiscal-year budget approved last February was $3.75 million, the largest budget for any department in the city.
