Merck & Co.: The Rahway, N.J., health products firm’s 1989 net income increased 24% to $1.5 billion as sales rose 10% to $6.6 billion. Fourth-quarter profit climbed 20% from a year earlier to $367.9 million on sales of $1.8 billion, up 15%. The company cited new products, strong unit volume gains, a better product mix, expense control, productivity improvements and a lower tax rate as reasons for its improved performance.
