El Cortez to House New Courtrooms
The San Diego City Council formally completed a deal to spend $3 million in redevelopment funds to build nine county courtrooms in the old El Cortez Hotel Convention Center downtown.
The council also granted developers of the site a special permit to redevelop the site.
The vote, which makes final an initial agreement between the city and county approved by both agencies Dec. 12, requires that the nine new Superior courtrooms become a permanent addition to the downtown judicial system.
Under an amended cooperation agreement, the new courts will be housed in the El Cortez, at 8th Avenue and Beech Street, for the next five years. After that, the city and county will work together to determine where the permanent courtrooms will go.
