Wide receiver Chris Chiarappa of Palomar College has signed a national letter of intent with Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.
Chiarappa, one of eight community college football players to sign with NAU, caught 80 passes for 1,393 yards and scored nine touchdowns in 1989. Chiarappa and teammate Eric Hansen were the national community college’s first- and third-leading receivers and the first teammates in Mission Conference history to gain more than 1,000 receiving yards each in the same season.
MEN’S TENNIS
Jose Luis Noriega defeated Chris Ewing, 6-3, 6-4, to lead the University of San Diego to a 9-0 victory over visiting UC Riverside in the 17th-ranked Toreros’ season opener. Noriega teamed with J.R. Edwards to defeat Ewing and Greg Skaggs in No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-2.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Camille Armijo scored 29 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene to its first Golden State Athletic Conference victory of the season, 79-73 over Christ College Irvine.
Armijo was 15 of 16 from the line, including 13 of 14 in the second half for the Crusaders (9-9, 1-3). Christ College Irvine is 3-15 and 0-4.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Kevin Kurz hit a jumper with 2:12 remaining to give Christ College Irvine its first lead of the second half on the way to an 87-83 victory over Point Loma Nazarene in a Golden State Athletic Conference at Irvine. Ron Hubbard scored 24 points for the Crusaders (0-5, 6-14.)
