IRVINE — An Irvine man was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday morning after his car caught fire while he was behind the wheel, police said.
Sina Taleghani, 26, suffered severe burns when his car burst into flames at 7:15 a.m., said Sgt. Steve Frew.
Police and firefighters received reports of a car fire at the intersection of Deerfield Avenue and Nantes Circle. When they arrived, witnesses had already extinguished the flames, Frew said.
Police found Taleghani in the driver’s seat, Frew said.
Taleghani was airlifted to UCI Medical Center in Orange.
Investigators later found a flammable liquid in the car, Frew said. He would not elaborate on whether it was stored in a can or appeared to be what caused the fire.
“The cause of the fire is unknown at this time,” Frew said.
