CLU’s Whitney Selected in 2nd Round of CFL Draft

Cal Lutheran offensive lineman Ken Whitney was chosen by the British Columbia Lions in the second round of Saturday’s Canadian Football League draft.

Whitney, who transferred to Cal Lutheran after playing two seasons at Gavilan Community College in Gilroy, Calif., was the strongest player on the Kingsmen roster. He reportedly was able to bench-press more than 600 pounds.

“What we really like about him is that he’s big and has leadership,” Joe Kapp, Lions president and general manager, told the Vancouver Province. “You win with people who have those qualities.”

Whitney, a 6-foot-6, 283-pound native of Calgary, was the 10th pick overall among Canadian players who completed their eligibility at U. S. and Canadian schools after the 1989 season.
