Todd Long pitched a six-hitter as Golden West College defeated Cuesta, 4-0, in the first round of the Southern California regional baseball playoffs Friday at Huntington Beach.
It was the first shutout for a Golden West pitcher since the opening game of the 1988 season. Long (8-3) had five strikeouts and allowed only one runner to reach third base.
Golden West (26-12) scored two runs in the first inning and two in the seventh. Robb Carabba scored as part of a double steal in the first and Frank Herman later scored on a single by John Bammer. In the seventh, Carabba tripled before Herman had an RBI double and scored on a single by Gary Christopherson.
The teams play today at Golden West at 11 a.m. in the best-of-three series. A second game follows if needed.
