SOUTHLAND : 27 Arrested in AIDS Protest
Twenty-seven people were arrested today at a county Board of Supervisors meeting during a boisterous demonstration and sit-in sponsored by a militant group of AIDS activists, who accused the supervisors of failing to adequately fund AIDS programs.
The chanting members of AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power-Los Angeles were dragged out by more than 30 sheriff’s deputies and county marshals who were assigned to the meeting after the group announced plans to hold the demonstration. The group held a vigil Monday night outside County-USC Medical Center to protest what they contend is inadequate staffing at the county’s lone AIDS ward.
