SHORT TAKES : Sculptor Nina Winkel, 85, Dies

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Noted sculptor Nina Winkel, who was in a coma for more than three months after a car accident, has died of her injuries. She was 85.
Winkel lapsed into a coma on Jan. 22, after the car her husband was driving skidded off a snow-covered highway near Plattsburgh in northern New York state and struck a guard rail. She died Thursday at Elizabethtown Community Hospital.
She received many accolades for her sculptures in the United States, including the National Sculpture Society’s Medal of Honor and the Samuel F.B. Morse Medal.
