Students Win Trips to Hong Kong in Contest

Teams from San Fernando Valley and Ventura County schools were among five teams that won trips to Hong Kong on Thursday in an academic competition testing students’ knowledge of Pacific Rim countries.
Reed Junior High School in North Hollywood and Valley View Junior High School in Simi Valley finished among the top five in the finals of the Ambassadors to Asia contest, sponsored by Cathay Pacific Airways and The Times.
Other winning schools were La Jolla Senior High School in La Jolla; University High School in Irvine and San Gorgonio High School in San Gorgonio.
Teams from more than 1,950 schools entered the essay portion of the contest.
The top 10 teams were selected for the verbal competition, in which students were asked questions on economics, culture, history and current events.
