NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Census Count Logs 81% of Households

The Census Bureau said it has counted 81% of the nation’s estimated 106 million housing units. It was the most positive report to date of the much-criticized 1990 census. Troubles began when the first phase of the national head count ended April 24 with only 63% of the nation’s housing units returning the census form. Since then, thousands of census takers have fanned out across the nation, knocking on the doors of those homes that either did not receive a mailed form or failed to return one. According to the new figures, Puerto Rico tops the completion rate with 98.3%
