Santa Monica : $250,000 Raised for Schools

Parishioners, local businesses and community leaders have raised $250,000 for the high school and elementary school affiliated with St. Monica Catholic Church, school officials announced.
Most of the money, $200,000, will go to St. Monica High School for a 10% increase in teacher salaries and for hiring a counselor, an administrator and another teacher at the 51-year-old school, said the principal, Sister Cheryl Milner. Teacher salaries now start at $23,000, she said.
Enrollment at the Catholic, college-preparatory school is expected to be 560 in the 1990-91 school year, Milner said.
The fund raising was spearheaded by Bill Mortensen, chairman of First Federal Bank of California, and by lawyer Richard Riordan.
The 300-student elementary school will get $50,000, with the money to be used to increase salaries of the 11 teachers there.
