President Bush Sends Troops to Saudi Arabia

Patrick Buchanan says Iraq displayed its power just 24 hours after the House Armed Services Committee cut the B-2, SDI, etc. (Commentary, Aug. 5). The U.S. has tens of thousands of nuclear warheads and at least a $1-billion Reagan military buildup. The Iraqis paid no attention to all of that capability. What makes him think that a paltry “$24-billion chop” would make any difference in the Arab world.
As others are suggesting, it is time for the U.S. and the Soviet Union to re-establish the United Nations as the agency to solve international problems. A truly united United Nations could do far more to deal with Saddam Hussein than any number of B-2s and SDIs.
