Your extensive and well-illustrated article on Waikoloa indicates that “Waikoloa was the fantasy of Christopher B. Hemmeter, the entrepreneur.” The fact is that while the Hyatt Regency Waikoloa is his development, the overall development of more than 30,000 acres of formerly volcanic ash, the golf courses, the resurgence of the fishponds, etc., were the dream and development of Boise Cascade more than 20 years ago.
Begun with the acquisition of the lava field in the late 1960s, and the planning and project execution in the early 1970s, the project was as long in gestation as it was in imagination. Hemmeter is to be congratulated. So is Boise Cascade.
