An Ideal Neighbor in Playa del Rey

Reading Jeffrey L. Rabin’s article “Big Stink Over Gas Storage” in today’s Times (Westside, Aug. 5) saddened me greatly--to learn that my neighbors are so totally uninformed. Oil fields beneath the coastal area is not news; nor is underground storage.
Surely Ms. Boster and “more than 100 neighborhood residents” could not have been “shocked to learn that the storage field underlies about 460 acres” unless they have been living in a vacuum. They bought property in this area, not knowing? They couldn’t see the oil pumps? The fenced, underground storage facilities? Surely, they jest.
One delight of living in Playa del Rey comes from not living a mere eight feet from an adjacent house. In March, 1983, when Hughes Realty opened several properties for sale, after careful research, we selected a lot that guaranteed us a quiet neighbor. In 1985 we built adjacent to this wonderful neighbor and have spent five years enjoying the serenity and feeling that neighbor provides. The neighbor is the well-maintained, landscaped open area known as Joyce I. We are thankful that the Southern California Gas Company owns this property, an underground storage facility.
No one can build a Mediterranean monstrosity, a concrete and glass house or a prefab gingerbread structure on Joyce I. Our neighbor has enabled us to enjoy a gentle west breeze, the smell of the sea air, and an unobstructed view of the sunset.
