CHICAGO — A donor liver has been found for a woman in need of emergency surgery after she apparently picked and ate poisonous mushrooms despite having studied botany, hospital officials said today.
Roberta Rogala, 55, was in extremely critical condition at the University of Chicago Hospitals.
Doctors said a donor liver was found Wednesday night, and they scheduled the lengthy surgery for later today.
They believe that Rogala and her husband, William, ate poisonous mushrooms last week at their cottage in Dewey Lake, Mich.
Roberta Rogala, who studied botany in college, picked the mushrooms and cooked them to put on hamburgers, said her husband, who also got sick but recovered.
“She’s a person who can name you 55 different plants by their names, so I really just went along with her,” he said.
