Heist in Cannes: Nineteen paintings worth at least $2 million, including works by Picasso and Renoir, were stolen by thieves in Cannes, France, who lowered themselves into a fifth-floor apartment by rope, police said Thursday. There was no burglar alarm system in the studio apartment owned by a former government official. Among the works reported stolen were paintings by Amedeo Modigliani and Edouard Manet. Officials initially estimated the value of the stolen paintings at $2 million, but later said the value was likely much higher.
