P.M. BRIEFING : N.Y. Post Union Says No to Cuts

NEW YORK — The largest union at the New York Post unanimously rejected a management demand that workers take 30% pay cuts or face closure of the paper, the newspaper reported today.
Members of the Newspaper Guild called the proposal “obscene and degrading,” the paper said.
Post owner Peter Kalikow has threatened to close the paper on Sept. 15 if he doesn’t get $17 million worth of givebacks from the paper’s nine unions.
Other unions have not responded to management’s proposals, which labor leaders received Wednesday. Round-the-clock negotiations are expected to begin next week.
The Newspaper Guild represents 337 reporters, editors, salespeople and clerical workers at the city’s oldest paper.
