DHAKA, Bangladesh — President Hussain Mohammed Ershad has proposed a meeting of Asian Muslim countries to discuss the Persian Gulf crisis and ways to overcome its effects, state television said.
The broadcast late Wednesday said that Foreign Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud has visited Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and the Maldives as Ershad’s emissary to organize such a meeting. Dhaka is sending up to 5,000 troops to Saudi Arabia to join a multinational force to deter any Iraqi offensive, a move endorsed by Parliament but criticized by major opposition parties.
