Hopkins Leads La Quinta Past Westminster, 16-8

GARDEN GROVE — La Quinta quarterback Donald Hopkins passed for 158 yards and a touchdown to lead the Aztecs to 16-8 nonleague victory over Westminster Thursday at Bolsa Grande High School.
Hopkins connected with Steve Quach for a 51-yard touchdown pass with 1 minute 10 seconds left in the first half. Ken Granger’s extra point gave La Quinta a 13-0 lead.
After a scoreless first quarter, Hopkins opened the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown run that capped a 12-play, 46-yard drive for La Quinta (1-0).
Hopkins kept the first scoring drive alive with an 18-yard fourth-down completion to Dusty Dupree.
Granger extended the Aztec lead to 16-0 in the third quarter with a 24-yard field goal.
Westminster (0-2) scored its only touchdown on a run by Gabriel Levens with 2:31 left in the third quarter. The Lions added a two-point conversion pass from Kirk Pearce to Lucas Jones.
