Brethren Christian
Coach: Mike Roark (first year)
1989 record: 2-8, 0-6 in Olympic League
Returning lettermen: 11
Returning starters: Seven on offense, seven on defense
Top returnees: Frank Brady, RB-DB, 6-0, 180, Sr.; Jon Coley, OL, 6-1, 190, Sr.; Dave Kogler, WR, 5-6, 170, Sr.; Tim Nichol, FB-LB, 6-1, 190, Sr.; Dave Rosa, OL, 6-1, 195, Sr.; Brandon Stott, QB-LB, 6-1, 180, Sr.
Top newcomers: Johnny Deweese, LB, 5-8, 185, Jr.; Tim Osborne, Wr., 5-11, 165, So.; Scott Thomas, WR, 5-11, 165, So.
Outlook: Roark can only hope the Warriors don’t pull another nosedive. After opening last season with two victories, they lost their last seven games by a total of 269-39. Brethren’s future this year is in the hands of Stott, whose older brother, Derek, is the starting quarterback at Nevada Las Vegas. Brady will make the Warriors’ running game a threat and Nichol will key the defense.
Calvary Chapel
Coach: Kris Van Hook (first year)
1989 record: First year, Arrowhead League
Returning lettermen: None
Returning starters: From junior varsity, 10 on offense, 10 on defense

Top newcomers: David Hernandez, RB-LB, 5-7, 160, Jr.; Danny Sundquist, TE-DL, 6-3, 200, Fr.
Outlook: Calvary Chapel fields its first varsity team this year. It lost only two starters from last year’s 7-3 junior varsity team--running back Steve Flores, who’s out because of disciplinary reasons, and defensive back David Ortiz, who quit the team.
Capistrano Valley

Coach: Bob Denson (third year)
1989 record: 1-8, 1-3 in Arrowhead League
Returning lettermen: Six
Returning starters: Six on offense, six on defense
Top returnees: Brian Biegert, RB, 5-10, 160, Sr.; Jeff Bishop, WR, 5-10, 145, Sr.; Darren Crail, RB, 5-8, 150, Sr.; Tim Louch, OL-DL, 6-4, 200, Jr.; Todd Meddings, OL-DL, 6-1, 185, Sr.; Cory Susag, OL-DL, 6-0, 180, Jr.
Top newcomers: Ernest Crawford, TE-DE, 6-4, 210, Sr.; Derin Henry, QB, 5-10, 145, Sr.; Mark Wilson, TB-QB, 5-11, 165, Sr.
Outlook: Denson had three late additions to his roster--Crawford, Wilson and quarterback Greg Looney. Wilson sat out last season with a broken right foot. Crawford transferred from Riverside and Looney transferred from Palm Springs. That leaves Denson with a roster of 19 players.
Orange Lutheran
Coach: Tim Taube (first year)
1989 record: 2-8, 1-5 in Olympic League
Returning lettermen: 15
Returning starters: Four on offense, two on defense
Top returnees: Lee Back, RB, 5-8, 155, Sr.; Karl Blanke, QB-DL, 6-0, 185, Sr.; Brad Darling, DL, 6-3, 225, Sr.; Len Gavin, QB, 5-11, 170, Jr.; Phil Mateson, RB, 5-8, 160, Sr.; Scott Whitney, LB, 5-11, 180, Sr.
Top newcomers: Scott Doremus, OL, 6-0, 185, Jr.; Brandon Orman, RB, 6-0, 180, Jr.; J.P. Presley, OL-DL, 5-9, 180, Jr.
Outlook: Taube, the Lancers’ junior varsity coach last season, replaces Bob Dowding, who had coached the varsity since 1973. The Lancers kept games close in the first half last season, then faded. “Conditioning is a concern because we have people playing both offense and defense,” Taube said. “But from a mental approach, we have to put together good halves.”
Santa Margarita
Coach: Jim Hartigan (second year)
1989 record: 8-4, 4-2 in Olympic League
Returning lettermen: 29
Returning starters: 10 on offense, 11 on defense
Top returnees: Nathan Beckett, OL, 6-6, 280, Sr.; John Byszewski, TE, 6-1, 225, Sr.; Mike Farris, LB, 6-0, 191, Sr.; Josh Ireland, RB, 5-10, 180, Jr.; Ryan Mummert, OL, 6-4, 235, Sr.; Sergio Muniz, RB, 5-6, 167, Sr.; Jason Ortiz, LB, 5-9, 185, Sr.; David Shearer, WR, 5-11, 165, Sr.; Trevor Yankoff, QB, 6-1, 175, Sr.
Top newcomers: J.J. Wilson, WR, 5-7, 140, Jr.; Thad Zak, LB, 6-1, 175, Sr.
Outlook: With only 39 players on the varsity roster, Hartigan faces a tough test playing a free-lance schedule. The Eagles, in their second season of varsity football, were 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the Olympic League last year. Yankoff passed for more than 1,000 yards last year, and Ireland rushed for 1,079 yards.
Southern California
Christian
Coach: Rick Hayes (third year)
1989 record: 7-4, 4-0 in Arrowhead League
Returning lettermen: Seven
Returning starters: Five on offense, four on defense
Top returnees: Toby Dembowski, RB-LB, 6-3, 205, Sr.; Nathan Lambie, QB, 5-10, 155, Jr.; Chris Ludlow, WR-DB, 6-3 185, Sr.; Jason Ondrack, OL-DB, 5-9, 175, Sr.
Top newcomers: Gary Herzog, OL, 5-10, 205, Sr.; Matt Kaudy, RB-LB, 5-10, 160, Sr.; Paul Lang, WR-DB, 6-4, 185, Sr.
Outlook: The Flames are undefeated in the Arrowhead League since joining two seasons ago. Dembowski was an all-league selection the past two years at outside linebacker, but will move to inside linebacker. He also will play fullback on offense instead of the line. Lambie returns at quarterback after throwing for 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.

Coach: Phil Bravo (fifth year)
1989 record: 11-1, 6-0 in Olympic League
Returning lettermen: 22
Returning starters: Six on offense, seven on defense
Top returnees: Phillip Franco, OL, 5-11, 260, Jr.; Roman Gallegos, OL-LB, 5-10, 235, Jr.; Ryan McEntire, OL, 5-11, 235, Sr.; Aaron Meshuck, OL, 6-1, 190, So.; Jim Moulton, WR, 5-10, 165, Sr.; Ron Rector, DL, 5-10, 165, Sr.; Rex Pritchard, LB, 5-9, 160, Sr.; Nick Sanchez, QB, 6-1, 175, Sr.; Dave Whitby, WR-DB, 6-0, 160, Sr.
Top newcomers: Bryan Clardy, OL, 6-1, 187, Jr.; Mickey Fortie, WR-DB, 5-10, 175, Sr.
Outlook: Can the Heralds survive without fullback-linebacker Ron Papazian? Bravo thinks so. Sanchez is a threat as a passer, and he has good receivers in Martinez, Moulten, Whitby and Fortie. Papazian will be replaced by Rector, who has 4.59 speed in the 40-yard dash and is one of the team’s strongest players.
