Series of Blasts Reported in Iraqi Town Near Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria — A series of 46 explosions rocked an Iraqi town near the Syrian border Sunday, and there were an undetermined number of casualties, Syria’s official news agency reported. Iraq denied the report.
The Syrian news agency correspondent in the Syrian town of Boukamal, three miles west of Al Qaim, reported that “minutes after the wave of explosions,” appeals for urgent blood donations were made over loudspeakers in the Iraqi town’s mosques.
The American network ABC identified the site of the blasts as the Al Qaim chemical plant.
Last month, Polish workers returning home from Iraq said that about 35 Americans were taken to the plant in Al Qaim on Aug. 17 under guard. Iraq has some moved Western men to army installations, factories and other potential military targets.
