NEWPORT, R.I. — A 77-year-old grandmother was sentenced to an indefinite prison term today for contempt of court because she has not told a judge where her daughter has taken her two young granddaughters.
Mary Pigeon said nothing as she stood before Superior Court Judge Mark A. Pfeiffer during the five-minute hearing.
The girls were taken from their Warwick home five years ago by their mother, Elaine Yates, who is Pigeon’s daughter. Yates’ estranged husband, Russel M. Yates Jr., has custody and has been trying to find the girls, ages 8 and 6. Pigeon contends that she doesn’t know where her daughter and granddaughters are.
