This Division I stuff may not be so tough after all. One day after finishing fifth in a 16-team tournament at Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge swept Oklahoma on Sunday at Matador Gymnasium.
CSUN showed no signs of fatigue in its home opener, winning 15-7, 15-8, 15-8 in its sixth match in four days.
Oklahoma (2-4) took early leads in the first two games, but each time middle hitter Kathleen Dixon put the Matadors ahead with well-placed dinks and blocks.
Nancy Nicholls contributed in the second half of the second game with six powerful kills.
Northridge (7-3) controlled the third game from the start. An ace by Nicholls, a Dixon-Fitzsimmons block, a Dixon kill and two kills by reserve Jill Trehearne contributed to an 8-1 advantage.
The Sooners responded with a series of kills and an ace to pull within 9-7, but CSUN closed the door for a 15-8 final capped by Shelly Swalec’s ace.
Dixon finished with 10 kills, five blocks and two service aces and setter Beth Welch had 30 assists, a team-high 12 digs and five kills.
