RATFINK: Ed (Big Daddy) Roth, the hot rod designer, cartoonist and quintessential Southern Californian, blames the decision to tear down the Huntington Beach Pier for his move last year to Utah. “That was it,” says the creator of the obese rodent, “Ratfink.” “That was the final straw.” Roth, who worked as a sign painter at Knott’s Berry Farm in the 1980s, says: “What’s left in California is a bunch of kids who don’t have anything to do, so they turn to drugs.”
