Vern Buffy, a former National Hockey League referee, has died of a heart attack. Buffy, 61, refereed his first NHL game Oct. 15, 1959. When he retired June 3, 1970, he had officiated in 487 regular-season games and 44 Stanley Cup playoff matches.
