Eight police officers who recovered the most stolen cars and made the most related arrests last year were honored at Tuesday’s meeting of the City Council.
Although major crimes in Claremont rose less than 1% between 1985 and 1989, thefts increased more than 18%, Police Chief Robert E. Moody said. Auto thefts showed the greatest increase, more than doubling between 1985 and 1988, although falling slightly in 1989.
A total of 103 recovered vehicles and 31 arrests were credited to Officers Rick Garcia, Cliff Dean, Kent Jacks, Steve Valvo, Chris Bradley, Mike Keltner, Rick Luginbill and Russell Haynes. There were 170 vehicles stolen in Claremont in 1989, according to the FBI.
The award program is sponsored by the California Highway Patrol and the Automobile Club of Southern California.
