Rio Mesa 21, Camarillo 14--Quarterback Angel Lopez rushed for only seven yards, but he scored the winning touchdown on a one-yard run with 3:47 to play to give Rio Mesa a victory in its home opener.
Rio Mesa (1-1) took a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Lopez to tight end Sam Garcia. It was Garcia’s third scoring catch in two weeks.
Camarillo (0-2) tied the score, 7-7, with 40 seconds left in the first half as quarterback Corey Tucker (13 carries for 74 yards) rushed for an 11-yard touchdown.
Mike Madsen’s two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Camarillo a 14-7 lead.
Rio Mesa fullback Gordy Abellera gained 96 yards in 16 carries and scored on a three-yard run early in the fourth quarter to tie the score, 14-14. Spartan tailback Sal Balsano rushed for 94 yards in 19 carries.
